Tulsa, Oklahoma – Mitchell Cashion scored the game-winning goal to give the No. 2 ranked and No. 6 seeded Tulsa men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Creighton on Sunday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane moved to 16-1-1 on the season, while the Bluejays fell to 9-8-2 overall.
Tulsa will take on No. 11 seed West Virginia in the NCAA Third Round on Saturday, Nov. 27 beginning at 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
This is the fourth time that TU will play in the NCAA Third Round, including quarterfinal appearances in 2004 and 2009, and a Third Round finish in 2012.
“We’ve had great turnouts all year long, and it was a great atmosphere again tonight,” McIntosh said. “It is great to play at home in front of our fans and it is great for the local community to be able to watch high level games. We couldn’t be more grateful to play here and have our fans with us.”
Cashion earned his first goal of the season and second of his career as he punched a cross taken by Trace Ibrahim into the back of the net from a yard out at the 39:18 mark.
“Trace did a great job on the end line as he went one-on-one and beat the defender, then squared it and crossed it to Mitch who had a great run and was in a great spot to tuck it away,” McIntosh said.
Takayoshi Wyatt had a team-best three shots, while Austen Schweinert added two attempts, and Ben Barkley, Cashion and Alvaro Torrijos all had one attempt. Alex Lopez logged all 90 minutes in goal and recorded the shutout.
Tulsa had an 8-1 lead in shots, including a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal, while Creighton had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
