TULSA, Okla. - After losing their home at old Drillers Stadium two seasons ago, the Tulsa Athletic are yet again starting out somewhere new. For now, Veterans Park is the new home for the green and yellow.
“It's been hard moving around,” Athletic head coach Joe Ryan said. “We'd like to find a permanent home, somewhere we can call our own.”
This season each match day the park is transformed. Food trucks are brought in, concession stands are erected, and plenty of fans come out to support the team.
“If you want to bring your kids, you want to bring your wagon and just have a fun day at the park there is something else fun going on that you can be a part of,” Tulsa Athletic owner Tommy Kern said.
The goal is to not have to go anywhere else in the future.
We would really like to turn this park into every week's largest outdoor festival. Not only for “
us, but for other sports in Tulsa to be able to utilize this as a home for the whole city,” Kern said.
Ideally, they'd like to add more permanent seating. But for now, fans can come for free with their lawn chairs or blankets and take in a game.
“The goal is to build a sense of community, and have this be a community soccer team,” Kern said.
The Athletic's next home match is on June 10th at Veterans Park at 4 p.m. against FC Wichita.
