One win short. That's how close Beggs got to a storybook ending to a season marked by tragedy.

The Demons lost to Sperry 35-14 in the Class 2A state championship Thuhrsday night -- five weeks after Beggs running back Kayson Toliver was shot and killed. His younger sister Kloee died several days later. Their mother is in jail for the crime.

The Demons though played on, making it to the state title game before losing to Sperry. But Beggs' motivation going into the game wasn't "win for Kayson." It was "play for Kayson."
