It was a controversial move: Baker Mayfield with an OU flag at Ohio Stadium following Oklahoma's 31-16 win over the Buckeyes.
That emotional September night, he ran around the field, Mayfield waved the crimson flag over his teammates' heads before planting it in the "O" at midfield.
He apologized shortly after, mentioning his emotions wanting to mirror a similar action the team takes in Dallas during the Red River Showdown against Texas.
But the fans seemed to love it, and now, they want the moment memorialized.
In fact, 2,000 fans have already put their name to a petition for a statue commemorating it.
Mayfield scored a slot as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. As he awaits the final award, his fans already decided the outcome and planned his place at the University of Oklahoma's Heisman Park, across from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
Next to greats like Sam Bradford, Billy Sims and Jason White, Sooners want to see Mayfield cast with that OU flag, planting it victoriously in Norman. "That moment set the tone for this season and it needs to be remembered," wrote one supporter.
"It was iconic," another said.
The Heisman trophy will be presented Dec. 9. Mayfield joins Louisville's Lamar Jackson and Stanford running back Bryce Lowe as finalists for the award.
