Booker T. Washington found its new head boys basketball coach, and it will be a first in the program’s history. The search committee recommended hiring Conley Phipps. When the Tulsa Board of Education officially approves the hire, Phipps will become the first white head coach in the program’s history.

Phipps is currently the head basketball coach at Sapulpa High School. Before that, he was an assistant coach for Scott Sutton at ORU, Billy Tubbs at TCU, and Larry Gipson and Ken Hayes at NSU.

"I have known Coach Phipps for 25 years and have watched him grow as a coach and a man,” said Booker T. vice principal and former Hornets coach Mike Mims, who recruited Phipps to play basketball at OU. “He will be a tremendous addition to our school and community. His connections at the next level will be a direct benefit to our student athletes."

The recommendation to hire Phipps was unanimous by the seven-member search committee.

"The screening committee did a great job and came up with an outstanding recommendation in Conley Phipps,” said Tulsa Public Schools athletic director Gil Cloud. “He will be an outstanding addition to the Booker T. Washington coaching staff and faculty."

The Tulsa Board of Education is expected to officially approve the hire sometime this month.
