BROKEN ARROW - Broken Arrow's rich history of pitchers taken in the MLB draft is a lot to live up to. Brad Penny, Archie Bradley, and now Kohl Franklin.
“I have to set my standards very high because those dudes are breaking through the roof,” Franklin said.
He's off to a good start. Franklin is the only Oklahoma high school player drafted this year, taken as the 188th overall pick in the 6th round by the Chicago Cubs.
“All the other kids I was competing against, they're great players. it's just wild,” Franklin said.
It's a moment Franklin has dreamed of his entire life. A moment he can barely put into words even days later.
“It was so just an ecstatic moment. My heart like just dropped right when I heard my name. It was crazy,” Franklin said.
Crazier still, having to decide between signing with the Cubs or playing for the Sooners. The pitcher signed a letter of intent to play for Oklahoma earlier this year.
“I want to say I’m in a great position where I’m at right now, but it's going to be a tough decision,” Franklin said.
Kohl has yet to decide what route he’ll go. He has until July 13th to make a final decision.
