Colbert agreed to be suspended with pay Wednesday while he awaits a jury trial.
A multi-county grand jury said they want Colbert removed from office.
They called for three indictments and Colbert’s suspension and removal from office.
Colbert faces bribery and extortion charges.
According to court documents, the trouble started when Colbert and Deputy Jefferey Gragg reportedly conspired to accept a $10,000 bribe at a traffic stop for not pursuing drug charges.
The sheriff and his attorneys said the claims are false. They said the money was put into a state account.
Colbert will appear in court next month to see if he will be permanently removed.
