TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Little League and the City of Tulsa said softball fields at Savage Park are open and available to rent. However, some parents told FOX23 otherwise.

Some Tulsa girls softball parents feel like they’re being struck out when it comes to finding places to practice in Tulsa.

“It’s unfortunate for girls softball,” said softball parent Melanie Walker. “That park was built strictly for girls softball, now the city of Tulsa has no real softball fields.”

Walker said for more than 20 years, Savage Park has been the life-line for girls softball in Tulsa. The only park in Tulsa dedicated for girls softball.

The Tulsa Girls Softball Federation announced in November they were informed by City of Tulsa Parks Director Anna America they will no longer be serving the community. In a post on Facebook, the federation said, “This decision is not what we wanted to hear but it is and has never been ‘our’ park, although we’ve always treated it that way.”

The post continued, “We will always cherish these experiences and hope that you do also. Thank you for many TGSF volunteers for spending a bit of your time with us over the years.”

Since Tulsa Little League took it over earlier this year, Walker says her daughter’s team hasn’t been able to practice at Savage Park.

“We’ve just been told they’re not available for rental,” Walker said.

America said this was not the case, and the fields are available for rent.

Tulsa Little League staff told FOX23 they have had hundreds of reservations and they’re doing thousands of dollars worth of improvements to the fields.

America also said they’re giving the league a year and then the city will send surveys to parents asking if they are satisfied. She explained this is the city’s way to hold them accountable.

Currently, the City of Tulsa is no longer in charge of maintenance or utility costs under this agreement.

In fact, Tulsa Little League and America told FOX23 they’re expanding softball fields to other parks outside of Savage.

“One of the issues we’ve had with Savage is that it’s so far out it’s so far at the edge of the city we’ve had few people who actually live here participated out there. We’re hoping to expand girls softball and make it more accessible for people in other parts in the city,” America said.

Tulsa Little League said they’re adding four fields to Hilti Park for softball and LaFortune Park will have fields for both softball and baseball with turf.

Parents send FOX23 an email stating, “Tulsa Little League has been promising construction of ‘The Diamonds of LaFortune’ for about a decade now. Other than some fancy drawings, nothing has happened to make that dream any closer to reality.”

Tulsa Little League said tournaments will be happening soon, but they didn’t give an exact date.
