Officer buys birthday gift for child after mother caught shoplifting

HAMBURG, N.Y. — A police officer responding to a shoplifting call ended up buying a present for a child whose mother was accused of stealing from the store, officials said.

Town of Hamburg Police Department Officer Bret McCabe responded to the call and noticed some of the stolen items included gifts for one of the two children the woman had with her, WGRZ reported.

It was the child’s fifth birthday.

“Officer McCabe, able to see the big picture, went into the store and purchased a birthday gift with his own money for the young child, ensuring they would have a positive end to this police encounter and even more importantly, enjoy a birthday present,” the agency said on social media.
