74 pounds of cocaine found floating off Florida Keys

KEY WEST, Fla. — Authorities in Florida celebrated a white Christmas Wednesday, discovering more than 74 pounds of cocaine floating off the Florida Keys.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said a fisherman discovered the narcotics south of Sugarloaf Key, about 15 miles offshore in federal waters, the Miami Herald reported.

Because the drugs were found in federal waters, they were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

It’s not the first lost shipment found floating off South Florida waters.

In July, more than 50 pounds of cocaine washed up on a beach in Grassy Key. Earlier that month authorities also found 29 bricks of cocaine in Marathon.

In August and September nearly 150 pounds of marijuana were found near Key West and washed ashore. In October, more than 30 pounds of marijuana had washed up in the Florida Keys.
