Ryan Walters wins Republican bid for State Superintendent of Public Instruction

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma Secretary of Public Education Ryan Walters has won the Republican bid for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Walters beat out Republican competitor April Grace, the superintendent of Shawnee Public Schools.

Joy Hofmeister is currently Oklahoma’s State Superintendent, but she is vacating the seat as she runs on the Democratic ticket for Oklahoma governor in November.

In 2020, Walters was appointed Secretary of Public Education by Gov. Kevin Stitt.

Prior to his career in politics, Walters taught history at McAlester High School for eight years.

Walters is also Executive Director of Every Kid Counts Oklahoma and previously served as Executive Director of Oklahoma Achieves, an education initiative of the State Chamber of Oklahoma.

Walters will face off against Democrat Jena Nelson in the general election this November.
