Central Oklahoma deputy killed in head-on crash

OKLAHOMA CITY — (AP) — A central Oklahoma sheriff's lieutenant was killed Friday after a head-on crash in Oklahoma City, police said.

Canadian County sheriff's Lt. Shirley Lanning was westbound in an unmarked police vehicle on Northwest Expressway at 9:30 a.m. when her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into another vehicle, Oklahoma City police Sgt. Megan Morgan said.

Lanning was extricated from her vehicle and taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, Morgan said.

Two occupants of that other car were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Morgan said. Their names weren't immediately released.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Lanning had previously worked for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office and then retired from the University of Central Oklahoma campus police before joining the Canadian County office, Canadian County Sheriff Chris West said in a statement.

Lanning was on duty when the crash occurred, West said.
