Arrangements for public viewing, funeral set up for slain Oklahoma County deputy

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The public will have a chance to remember the life of Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Bobby Swartz Thursday and Friday.

Plans for a public viewing and funeral are now in place after he was shot and killed Monday afternoon while serving eviction papers at a home near Southwest 78th Street and Youngs Boulevard.

The public viewing is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bill Merritt Funeral Home at 6201 NW 39th Expressway in Bethany. Swartz’s funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City.

“You’re talking a lifetime of dedicated service to this community and to this sheriff’s office. I think there’s a lot to be said about that,” Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III said.

Swartz’s family released a statement saying he was an amazing man, father, grandfather, son and brother. His grandchildren affectionately called him “Papa Policeman.”

The family also wanted to thank the community for the prayers of comfort and support.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Swartz’s family cover the funeral costs. Click here if you’d like to donate.
