Oklahoma blood donors get chance to win European cruise vacation

Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) is giving away a European cruise to one lucky donor!

From Aug. 17 to Aug. 21, successful donors at OBI will be entered to win a European cruise vacation, courtesy of Nu Homes Oklahoma.

OBI said the giveaway is in celebration of a recent FDA reversal on European blood donor deferrals, due to the risk of mad cow disease. The nonprofit said the updated guidance is seeing previously deferred donors get the chance to donate for the first time in 20 years, including thousands of military families who were stationed abroad.

FDA’s updated blood donor guidance removes deferrals for donors who:

  • Spent time in the United Kingdom from 1980 to 1996
  • Spent time in France and Ireland from 1980 to 2001
  • Received a blood transfusion in the United Kingdom, France or Ireland from 1980 to present

OBI supports inventory for patients in more than 160 hospitals, medical facilities and air ambulances in the state. One blood donation saves up to three lives.

All those who donate, not just those who were previously deferred, are eligible for the European cruise giveaway.

You can donate blood at any donor center or mobile blood drive to be entered to win the prize. Donors will also receive free prizes including a travel tote, t-shirt, one entry to Frontier City or Science Museum Oklahoma or two entries to Safari Joe’s H2O Water Park.

Appointments to donate can be made online or by calling 877-340-8777. You can find a blood donation center near you here.
