WAGONER COUNTY, Okla. — Wagoner County Deputies say they responded to a man down in the area of Coal Creek Landing near the intersection at 275 Rd and 110 Rd in the Wagoner area February 20. Bystanders were looking at the snow and ice in the area when they found the victim.
When they arrived, deputies found a man in the parking lot area of Coal Creek. Wagoner Emergency Medical Personnel were called to the scene and the victim was pronounced dead upon their arrival. Deputies identified the man as Jeff Derrick, 61-year-old, of Hulbert, OK.
Investigators were called to the scene to process the scene and begin the investigation. The Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Investigator arrived on scene and, along with the Wagoner County Investigators, found 3 gunshot wounds to the body which appeared to be the apparent cause of death.
The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled this death a homicide.
The sheriff’s office posted about a red GMC pickup that they noticed had been around the hotel where Derrick had been recently staying. Elliott said they found the owner of the truck and determined Thursday afternoon that the driver was not connected.
Wagoner County Sheriff Chris Elliott says there have been several challenges with the investigation including the ice and snow that made it difficult to process the crime scene. He said the scene was in a remote area with very little people living nearby. Elliott added, “We find a body, no one can tell us how it got there, no one saw if it got dumped there, we don’t know how Mr. derrick got to that park, we don’t know if he was taken there… there’s very little evidence.”
Elliott said investigators are continuing to look at possible surveillance video of where Derrick was staying and plan to question anyone who may have more details about his death.
