Tulsa teen builds app to help busy families stay organized

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa eighth grader is getting ready to debut his very own app.

Arjun Deepak is a busy 13-year-old at University School on the University of Tulsa’s campus. He swims competitively for the Jenks Trojan Aquatic Club, plays guitar, stays afterschool with the robotics team and now, is about to launch an app on Google Play.

Deepak started working on the app in December 2021. He told FOX23 it all started when he picked up online coding classes through BYJU’s FutureSchool while he was home from school because of the pandemic.

His app is called Parent Connect and the idea for it came right out of Deepak’s daily life. “I saw that my mom was having a really hard time keeping track of all the activities that me and my sister do, because we do a lot, and she’s a full-time working physician,” he said.

In the app, there’s an activities section where you can organize school times, sports and other afterschool activities, an events tab for commitments like competitions, and an address book for other parents or contacts that updates based on who is available to help with pickup/drop-off.

Deepak built the app through coding on his computer alongside a teacher. Groups of specific words and symbols allowed him to create each small feature on the app. He said, “that’s probably the hardest part, because when it comes to coding there’s a lot of little details that you can’t miss otherwise it’s not going to work.”

The plan is to launch Parent Connect on Google Play in the next month.

“I’m hoping it makes a mom’s job easier, because they’re doing a lot, a lot of them are working, as well and a lot of them are planning a lot of things, so I’m really hoping Parent Connect can help a lot of moms with organizing all of their kids events.”

Deepak is also a finalist in a global coding competition through BYJU’s. Come December, he could become one of 18 kids to win $18,000 for the work he has done with his app.
