Tulsa real estate community prepares kids for school year with annual supplies drive

TULSA, Okla. (KOKI) — Greater Tulsa Association of Realtors is making sure kids are ready to go back to school with their annual ‘Backpacks for Kids’ event.

The real estate community partners with Family and Children’s Services in Tulsa to provide stuffed, customized backpacks for kids. The backpacks are filled with clothes, toiletries and shoes to get them ready for school.

This year, volunteers stuffed over 500 backpacks, costing thousands of dollars.

They say the easiest part was raising the money, the hardest part was going into Walmart and buying all of these items.

Last year, the association served 450 kids with backpacks. During the pandemic, volunteers were not able to personally distribute backpacks to the kids, but they got a gift card and backpack with toiletries.

The association has partnered with family and children’s services in Tulsa for 16 years to make sure students return to school prepared with the items they need.

Each backpack saves families about 75 dollars.
