TULSA, Okla. — The state of Oklahoma will soon be opening its second ever public Montessori program.
Tulsa Public Schools announced that the district is opening their second Montessori program at Grissom Elementary School. The first public Montessori program by TPS is at Emerson Elementary School, said TPS Spokesperson Lauren Partain.
Superintendent Deborah A. Gist said: “We have seen such an enthusiastic response to our first Montessori program at Emerson, so it is really exciting that Principal Rowland and the Grissom team are bringing this model to another neighborhood school in our district.”
The program will open for the 2021-2022 school year and will be offering a total of 100 seats.
TPS described Montessori classrooms as learning laboratories in which children explore, discover, and select their own work. They say the model recognizes the importance of student choice in creating engaging learning experiences and building independent learners. Students learn and understand the values of compassion, empathy, service, integrity, self-reliance and tolerance, says TPS.
“We are thrilled to bring Montessori to the Grissom community,” said Principal Brent Rowland. “If your child will be four years old on or before September 1, and you’re interested in exploring Montessori as an option, I encourage you to get in touch or attend one of our virtual enrollment events.”
TPS says the Montessori program will offer 55 pre-kindergarten seats and 45 kindergarten seats and will expand by one grade each year through the 2026-2027 school year.
Grissom Elementary School will host a virtual tour at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 for families who are interested in the program. To RSVP, email Ruth Ann Miller at firstname.lastname@example.org.
