TULSA, Okla. — A math teacher at Edison Preparatory Middle School has been arrested, accused of having sexual relations with a minor.
30-year-old Christin Covel was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon. Investigators say the incidents happened between 2018 and 2019 in Sedgwick County, Kansas.
Susan Arensman with Wichita Public Schools says the case was investigated by the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit, a joint operation between the Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say the crimes were reported last month.
Covel worked as a math teacher at Mead Middle School in Wichita from 2015 to 2020. During her time at the school, she served as a membership chair for the South Central Kansas Association of Math. Covel also won a Gold Apple award for “school spirit, planning, volunteering, and enthusiasm.”
In an email sent to parents, Tulsa Public Schools says the district completes background checks for employees. The district also says they did not receive any reports of inappropriate behavior from Covel at Edison.
There are policies in place when TPS employees are arrested. Employees are suspended pending the results of an investigation. Further action, including termination, could take place after the investigation is completed.
Covel faces several charges, including aggravated indecent liberties with a minor and unlawful sexual relations.
