The building has been abandoned for some time.

Firefighters said the fire is suspicious at the Old School Building on Old School Road.

Authorities say there is a possibility it’s arson; some neighbors say they saw someone suspicious around the time of the fire.

The fire chief says the history behind the school, which is along Keystone Lake, is what makes it so sad that it is now destroyed. It was built in the early 1900s.

Volunteer Fire Chief Pete Burris said, “When they built the dam, they had to move the town of Prue, hence you got new Prue, so the town of Prue, is actually under water; the school is the last remaining part of the old town.”

Firefighters say they worked to make sure the fire didn’t spread to nearby homes.

Grass and vehicles in the back of the building made the fire difficult to put out.
