Sand Springs Animal Shelter takes part in national ‘Empty the Shelters’ event

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. — An animal shelter here in Green Country is taking part in a national adoption event.

Empty the Shelters is sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation. During the event, adoption fees for pets are only $25. The Sand Springs Animal Shelter is one of the 275 shelters taking part in the event.

Brittany Schlacter handles marketing for the Bissell Pet Foundation.

“Since it was started in 2016, we have helped save more than 83,000 pets,” said Schlacter.

Shelters across the country are struggling with overcrowding. In Sand Springs, the shelter is well over capacity. “We are 110 percent full on the dogs so we are overcapacity, so we are definitely looking for some dogs to get adopted,” said Animal Welfare Coordinator Tracy Arvidson.

Empty the Shelters lasts from May 2 to May 15. You can learn more about the event here.
