Residents speak up as TPS proposes elementary school name change

TULSA, Okla. — A name change for a school in north Tulsa has parents and residents speaking out.

An elementary school formerly known as Ralph J. Bunche may receive a name change. The school closed in 2011 and was replaced with Dual Language Academy in 2015.

Now, TPS is looking for a name. The district is proposing Felicitas Mendez International School at Ralph J. Bunche.

Some neighbors, like Joyce Brown who went to Bunche Elementary, said she didn’t know about the recommendation and say others didn’t either. She says they’re asking that Bunche, the historic civil rights figure and the historic school be preserved and they name the school Ralph J. Bunche International School.

Brown says they should keep Bunche’s name and keep the Mendez name somewhere on their multilingual programming.

Tulsa Public Schools told FOX23 they do not have names for their multilingual programming.

TPS school board members have tabled the recommendation for another two weeks to get more input on the name from the community.
