Oklahomans listed on Southern Baptist Convention’s list of accused sexual abusers

The Southern Baptist Convention has released a list of hundreds of pastors and church volunteers accused of sexual abuse.

The document, which is 205 pages long, includes those both accused and convicted of crimes. The Southern Baptist Convention has also shared a statement on the research, saying they hope the information leads to reform within the Convention.

23 people on the list preached in Oklahoma. We have complied a list of those included, along with links to prior news coverage and court documents.

Damien Keith Bonner

Damien Bonner was convicted on two counts of lewd molestation and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2014. Bonner was the pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Galilee Baptist Church in Tulsa. You can read more about Bonner’s case here.

Vincent Melvin Brookfield

In 2011, Vincent Brookfield was accused of sexually abusing a child between 2003 and 2004. Brookfield was a preacher at Tulsa’s New Hope Baptist Church. He was convicted on two counts of child sexual abuse and sentenced to 15 years in prison. You can read more about Brookfield’s case here.

Charles “Chuck” Bryan, Junior

Charles Bryan, Junior was a youth volunteer at Chisholm Creek Baptist Church in Edmond. He pleaded guilty and was convicted on three counts of lewd and indecent propositions involving a 15-year-old girl in 2019. He is currently serving probation and is a registered sex offender. Brian Burchfield

Brian Burchfield was convicted of soliciting sexual conduct of communication with a minor with use of technology in 2016. Burchfield was a youth minister at Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee. He served six months in prison and is currently serving 10 years probation. He is listed on the Oklahoma sex offender registry. You can read more about Burchfield’s case here.

Thomas Cossairt

Cossairt is listed on the document as a former pastor in both Oklahoma and Iowa, though his church in Oklahoma isn’t listed. The crime happened in 1989. Cossairt is not listed on OSCN.

Douglas Dwayne Davis

Douglas Davis, a former youth preacher at Village Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, was arrested in 2009. Davis was convicted on two charges of second-degree rape and one count of lewd or indecent proposals to a child. He was released in May 2022 and is a registered sex offender in Oklahoma. Davis is currently on probation. You can read Davis’ case here.

Darrell Gilyard

Darrell Gilyard was investigated at multiple churches in three states, including Oklahoma. The document says that Gilyard was an assistant pastor at Hilltop Baptist Church in Norman in the 1990s. Gilyard is a registered sex offender in Florida following a conviction of molestation charges against two teenaged girls. He is not listed on OSCN.

Henry David Gleason

Gleason, a former priest at Harmony Star Freewill Baptist Church in Claremore, was convicted on three counts of lewd molestation and one count of sexual battery in 2019. The youngest victim was 7-years-old. You can read about Gleason’s case here.

Jody Hilliard

Hilliard was a former assistant pastor at First Baptist Church in Duncan. He was convicted on five counts of lewd and indecent proposals to a child under 12 in 2018. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison, but died months later. You can read about Hilliard’s case here.

Kenneth Wayne Huneycutt

Huneycutt was a pastor at New Hope Baptist Church in Ada. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to four charges of lewd molestation and was sentenced to 13 years in prison. You can read about Huneycutt’s case here.

Everice Daniel Johnson

Johnson was a youth minister at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ardmore when he was accused of molesting a child under 16 in 1999. While the Southern Baptist Convention has Johnson listed, documents involving this case were not listed on OSCN.

Roy Jones

In 1992, Roy E. Jones received a 7-year suspended sentence after allegedly abusing several young girls in the late 1980s. Jones was a pastor at First Baptist Church of Del City. Jones was initially charged with five counts, but three of those charges were dismissed. He was ultimately convicted on two counts of indecent or lewd acts with a child under 16. Steve Lamberson

Lamberson was a pastor at Liberty Heights Free Will Baptist Church in Tulsa. He was convicted on two charges of lewd molestation in 1992 after prosecutors say he molested a teenager. He was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison. You can read about Lamberson’s case here.

Joseph Monroe Leal

Leal was a pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church in Henryetta. He was arrested in 2011, accused of sexing with a girl he met during church camp. Leal was charged and convicted in Tulsa County in 2011. Leal pleaded guilty to two counts of using technology to engage in sexual communication with a minor. He was sentenced to six years in prison for each count. You can read about Leal’s case here.

Marvin James Lowe

Lowe was a pastor at Arbeka Indian Baptist Church in Weleetka. He was charged with multiple counts of lewd molestation, assault and battery in 2009. However, he was found not guilty. Lowe’s case was not listed on OSCN.

Aaron McDonald

McDonald was the music director at both the First Baptist Church of Dewar in Okmulgee County and Calvary Baptist Church in Sulphur. He pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual battery in 2002. He was released from prison in 2005. You can read about McDonald’s case here.

Benjamin Lawrence Petty

Prosecutors say Petty raped a 13-year-old girl while working as a cook at Falls Creek Church Camp in 2016. Petty pleaded guilty to three counts; first-degree rape, rape by instrumentation, and forcible sodomy. However, Petty’s guilty plea was part of a plea deal. He was sentenced to 15 years of probation and wore an ankle monitor. Petty violated his probation in 2020 and was sent to prison for a 15 year sentence. You can read about Petty’s case here.

David Glen Randol

Randol was a youth minister at Arrow Heights Baptist Church in Broken Arrow. In 1996, he was accused of abusing a 13-year-old. Police say Randol killed himself after he was told he would be charged with molestation.

Billy Ray Smith

Smith volunteered with Calvary Baptist Church in Durant for 30 years. In 2010, he was arrested on one charge of forcible oral sodomy. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. You can read about Smith’s case here.

Joshua Spires

Spires was a preacher at First Baptist Church of Jay, in Delaware County. He was convicted on 10 counts of lewd molestation of a minor and served nine years in an Oklahoma prison. Spires was released on probation and is now a registered sex offender in Texas.

Dustin Ray Werneburg

Werneburg, a youth pastor at First Baptist Church of Coalgate, was convicted on rape charges and sentenced to 10 years in 2012. He is currently incarcerated.

Sean David Whisenhunt

Whisenhunt was a youth minister at Central Baptist Church in Owasso. He was convicted in 2010 on a sexual battery charge and received a suspended sentence. However, he failed to update his information as a registered sex offender and received another suspended sentence in 2013. Whisenhunt is currently registered as a sex offender in Oklahoma.

Roy Edward Williams

Williams, a longtime church member and former pastor at Bunker Hill Baptist Church in Vinita, was arrested in 2020 on four charges of lewd molestation and one county of possessing child pornography. Williams pleaded guilty to all counts in April 2022. Investigators say Williams committed the crimes between 2002 and 2018. Williams has yet to be sentenced in federal court.
