OKC Zoo announces birth of rare leopard cub

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Oklahoma City Zoo has welcomed a new clouded leopard kitten.

The rare cub was born to mom Rukai on August 6. This is Rukai’s first successful birth with her partner, JD.

Because the cub is rare, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan recommends that zookeepers raise the kitten to ensure its survival.

“The kitten appears very strong and healthy, and we are thrilled by the progress she’s making,” said Tyler Boyd, OKC Zoo’s curator of carnivores. “For myself and entire team, the opportunity to care for this offspring, who is incredibly valuable to the conservation of this critically vulnerable species, is a career highlight.”

Clouded leopards are native to Nepal and Bangladesh. They are also the smallest of the big cat species.
