New Hearing for Joe Exotic could mean lesser sentence

A judge ruled Joe Exotic will get a new sentence.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit ordered the resentencing in July but affirmed his conviction.

Joseph Maldonado-Passage was convicted in the Oklahoma City federal court and sentenced to 22 years in prison for a murder-for-hire plot and for violating wildlife laws. Joe’s attorney appealed his sentence.

FOX23 Investigative Reporter Janna Clark has been following this story for years, exchanging letters with Joe Exotic while he is serving his sentence. In his most recent letter he wrote:

“I am numb to this whole ordeal. I should not even be here... The last time I had a sentencing they raised my points to give me more time for things I was not even charged or accused of - just to make it worse than it is… The whole system is broken.” -Joe Exotic

Exotic’s feud with animal rights activist Carol Baskin was highlighted in the Netflix series “Tiger King”.

John Reinke is also famous for being on the series as the manager of the Wynnewood animal park under Joe Exotic. He’s been working with Team Tiger to help free Joe.

“Need to keep free joe out there, the man needs to get out of jail,” Reinke said.
