Muskogee cancels varsity football games against Booker T. Washington, Ponca City

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — After pausing football activities a week ago, Muskogee Public Schools announced Tuesday they’ll be canceling their upcoming varsity football games against Booker T. Washington and Ponca City.

The district says three total positive COVID-19 cases were reported within the varsity football team over the last six days.

“The number of student-athletes unable to participate in practice and competition due to direct contact during the academic day led to the unfortunate decision to cancel these two varsity football contests,” said Superintendent Dr. Jarod Mendenhall.

“The health and safety of our students must be the priority.”

The people who tested positive for the virus will be in self-isolation for 10 days from the date of the positive test or the onset of symptoms, the district says.

Students and staff who had been in direct contact -- within six feet for 15 minutes or more -- with those who tested positive are to be notified by school administration.

Football activities for the eighth and ninth grade football teams will continue as scheduled.
