Mayes County community reporting cows getting shot, killed

MAYES COUNTY, Okla. — Major Rod Howell, Mayes County Sheriff’s Office says there’s been a trend of livestock getting shot in a Mayes County neighborhood West 460 and North 442 road.

He says a calf was shot Tuesday night that was valued at around $1,000.

Last fall, he investigated another report of a cow being shot. Neighbors on social media say it’s been going on for months.

Major Howell says a homeowner heard three to four shots Tuesday night. He says the homeowner also saw a four-door, compact car immediately leave the area.

Major Howell says he does not know why people are shooting at cows, but believes it could be simply, a distasteful person, or kids with nothing else to do.

He says whomever is doing this will receive animal cruelty charges, and likely more.
