Two people dead after east Tulsa church fire

TULSA, Okla. — A man and woman are dead after a fire at a church in east Tulsa early Friday morning.

Tulsa firefighters were called to Memorial Drive Church of Christ near 8th Street and Memorial around 1:30 a.m. as fire broke through the roof of the massive building.

Two people were pulled out of the building and taken to the hospital as crews worked to get the flames under control. About 50 firefighters were on the scene at the fire’s peak as it burned through the attic area and crawl spaces of the church.

Firefighters told FOX23 the man and woman pulled from the building were likely inside the vacated building trying to keep warm. Both victims later died at the hospital.

The cause of the fire is still in question as the building was supposed to be vacated after it took significant damage from a fire in July.

The church’s congregation planned to rebuild it after its planned demolition before Friday’s fire.
