Man arrested in suspected DUI crash with three children in the car

TULSA COUNTY, Okla. — A Sand Springs man was arrested Friday night after troopers say he ran off the road and struck a sign with three children under the age of 10 in the car.

Troopers responded to the crash just after 7 p.m. on I-44 near 33rd West Avenue.

The driver, Russell Wells, 35, refused treatment while firefighters spent nearly two hours trying to rescue a 9-year-old boy from the vehicle, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol incident report.

The boy was taken to the hospital in stable condition with head, body and leg injuries, troopers said.

Two other children, ages, 8 and 3, were not injured, troopers said.

Wells was taken to the Tulsa County jail on a driving under the influence complaint and for causing a collision resulting in great bodily harm, according to jail records.
