Two lanes are closed on the Broken Arrow Expressway in downtown Tulsa after a large piece of concrete fell onto a car Thursday evening.

ODOT considers many of the bridges on the south side of the IDL to be structurally deficient, but dwindling state funds means it could take some time before they are replaced.

The driver of the damaged car walked away from the accident and got a ride from a friend or family member.

"It was a big surprise to us that this happened. We are very thankful that the driver was not injured," said Kenna Carmon with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

ODOT inspects every bridge at least every two years and the Main Street Bridge was inspected last August. Officials believe a wet spring caused the asphalt on the bridge to hold water.

"We are also seeing some deterioration at some of the drains along the side of the bridge. We believe that this loose piece of concrete came along some of the joint areas," Carmon said.

The Main, Boston and Cheyenee street bridges are scheduled for a $3 million rehabilitation project.
