Claremore’s City Council votes to create The Lilac District in honor of Lynn Riggs

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Claremore’s City Council has voted to honor author and native Lynn Riggs.

An eight block section of downtown Claremore will be named The Lilac District, in honor of Riggs’ play Green Grow the Lilacs. The play was later adapted into the iconic musical, Oklahoma!

“Lynn Riggs was an important figure in American history, and Claremore is honored to recognize his contributions as a poet, author and playwright,” said John Feary, Claremore City Manager.  “As part of the continued revitalization in our downtown, we look forward to bringing back long-standing traditions like the Lilac Festival.”

The Lilac District will include outdoor space for shopping and dining. The City will also update maps, signage, and parking in the area.
