Tulsa’s Admiral Twin is celebrating their 70th anniversary Friday and Saturday, showing the movie that put them on the big screen.
We told you the iconic drive-in theater was the backdrop for scenes in the S.E. Hinton film adaptation of “The Outsiders.” Something that prompted Poneyboy himself, C. Thomas Howell, to record a special shout-out.
Tonight the Admiral Twin is giving away shirts and souvenir cups to the first 250 cars through the box office. Those cups can be used over and over again at the drive-in, giving people refills for only a dollar.
Owner, Blake Smith, says the theater has seen it’s share of challenges in the past 70 years.
“In 2010 we had a complete wood structure here and it burned down. We actually missed the 2011 season and were back in 2012,” Smith says.
We told you at the time, Smith wasn’t sure they’d be able to re-open after the fire.
This past year was also a challenge. The pandemic however only pushed the theater to get creative, hosting everything from virtual concerts to naturalization ceremonies.
Tickets for tonight’s anniversary show are on sale now.
