TULSA, Okla. - An investigation into a child's death revealed filthy living conditions in a Tulsa home, according to police.
Wednesday, police arrested Bruce Lee Bridges and April Marie Blakely on two counts of child neglect.
On April 13, Tulsa police said they began an investigation into the death of the couple’s two-month-old boy at the Commance Park apartment complex near 36th Street North and Peoria.
Investigators said the baby’s death was a tragic accident. They believe the child suffocated while sleeping in a bed with his parents.
During this investigation, officers said they found the couple’s two other children, ages three and one, were living in a filthy home.
An affidavit states officers smelled rotten trash, rotting food and dog feces and urine as they entered the apartment. They also reportedly saw piles of trash, dirty clothes and junk throughout the home.
Although the family stayed in a three-bedroom apartment, police believe the entire family slept downstairs on dirty mattresses. They said junks and piles of clothes blocked the stairway.
Officers said two of the bedrooms were filled with trash and dirty clothes. They said a dog covered the floor of a third bedroom with dog feces. They said the room smelled like urine.
Once officials removed the children, the doctor at the Children’s Advocacy Center reportedly had to use several wet wipes to clean the kids. An exam revealed that the kids had multiple bug bites and bruises.
The Department of Human Services had previously investigated the couple in 2015 for abuse and neglect when their oldest child was only seven months old.
