Attorneys for ‘Joe Exotic’ file for new trial, seek to have more years knocked off sentence

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The attorneys for the man known as “Joe Exotic” have filed for a new trial.

Joseph Maldonado, who’s at the center of the Netflix docuseries “Tiger King,” was resentenced earlier this year for a 2020 murder-for-hire conviction. He originally was sentenced to 22 years in prison, but a federal judge reduced that sentence to 21 years in January.

Maldonado’s attorneys are appealing that new sentence and are looking for more years to be knocked off.

“Joe Exotic” is in a North Carolina prison undergoing cancer treatments.
