SAND SPRINGS, Okla. - Fire investigators are still trying to determine what caused an appliance store to go up in flames Tuesday night.
Not much was left of the nearly 100 year old building after crews worked to put out the fire at Try It Again Appliances on East Morrow Street in Sand Springs.
“It’s really hard because I’m looking at 18 years of my life,” owner Arlie Christmas said.
On Wednesday, Christmas came to look at the remains of what used to be his used appliance store. In daylight the extent of the damage was shocking.
“When you look at the big picture I came out pretty lucky,” Christmas said.
Tuesday night nearly two dozen firefighters worked to keep the fire under control. When Christmas got to his store Tuesday night, he knew it couldn’t be saved.
“By the time we got here the blaze was just out of control,” Christmas said.
Even hours later the charred debris and twisted metal smoldered were too hot for fire investigators to start working to figure out a cause. Christmas says he lost about $200,000 of inventory.
He feels his business helped many people in the community during its 18 year run.
“We were here to provide a service to those who couldn’t afford new appliances,” Christmas said.
No one was injured during the fire, and Christmas doesn’t know yet what he’ll do next.
“Maybe it’s God’s way of telling me that it’s my time to retire,” Christmas said.
