FC Tulsa’s season kicks off this weekend

TULSA, Okla. — FC Tulsa’s first game of 2022 is Saturday, and the team is excited to get going.

FOX23 spoke to the soccer club’s head coach, Michael Nsien, about the team’s goals heading into the season.

“We want to play a home playoff game here in Tulsa at ONEOK and get the fans there, and push to the next level,” said Nsien. “Take a further step in the playoffs.”

FC Tulsa made the USL playoffs in its last two seasons and is hoping to make this one its third-straight.

Nsien talked about what newcomers spectators should be excited about.

“JJ Williams and Brian Brown both have an elite pedigree in this league of scoring goals. We had quite a few goal scorers last year ourselves but I think they’ll be a great addition to the squad attacking up front,” said Nsien. “In the back line we needed some improvements as well. Ronald Rodriguez and Matheus Silva [were added] so we had a great offseason in terms of signings, and we really strengthened the squad.”

The club has nine first-time opponents this year, including two new USL teams, Detroit City FC and Monterey Bay FC, and new Eastern Conference rivals Charleston Battery, Miami FC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.

FC Tulsa will play Charleston Battery Saturday at 6 p.m. in Charleston, SC.

Nsien said having games broadcast helps fans connect with the team.

“Just having them support us at home or wherever they’re at, I think they get at least an attachment to the team,” said Nsien. “It just urges them to see us in person.”

Because of recent winter weather the season opener watch party at ONEOK Field Saturday night was canceled.
