Betty Shelby: What we know about the TPD officer involved in a deadly shooting

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa Police officer remains on paid administrative leave following the Friday shooting death of a man during a traffic stop. 

TPD confirmed officer Betty Shelby fired fatal shots at Terance Crutcher when she and another officer responded to 36th Street North and Lewis.

Joined the force in 2011

Tulsa Police released information about Betty Shelby, confirming her date of hire as Dec. 1, 2011.

Joined after leaving the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office

FOX23 confirmed with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office that Shelby was employed as a deputy from June 1, 2007 to Nov. 30, 2011. In her resignation letter, Shelby said she would be "honored and grateful" if she were to work for the department again.

She responded with another officer

Shelby and a second officer, identified as Tyler Turnbough, responded to the scene Friday night. Turnbough deployed his Taser during the incident.

She is on administrative leave

Per TPD policy, Shelby was placed on routine administrative leave with pay while the department investigates the shooting.
