TULSA, Okla. — Garth Brooks was born Feb. 7, 1962, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is the bestselling solo artist in American history, according to the RIAA.
He grew up in Yukon, just outside of Oklahoma City, and went to Oklahoma State University under a track and field scholarship to pursue a degree in advertising.
While in Stillwater, Brooks played music in local bars and eventually made the decision to move to Nashville to start a career in country music. He released his first album in 1989 and became a sensation with the release of his second album, “No Fences,” in 1990.
He went on to release 8 studio albums, sold millions of records and embarked on two world tours before hanging up his hat to retire and raise his children in 2001.
During retirement he married fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood, released a double album of greatest hits, performed a handful of charity concerts and began a residency in Las Vegas that led to his full-time return to music in 2014.
Since then, Brooks fronted a record-breaking three-year world tour, released two more albums and became the only 7-time CMA Entertainer of the Year. He is currently working on his 11th studio album.
