Ogden, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Weber State invoked a clause in football coach Jody Sears' contract and fired him Tuesday following a 2-10 season.

Sears was named Weber State's interim coach in April 2012 and went on to have a 2-9 season last year. He was promoted to the full-time job after the season, but his three-year contract allowed for the Big Sky Conference school to fire him after this season if the Wildcats didn't win at least four games.

Weber State beat only Stephen F. Austin in its season opener and Idaho State in its final game. The Wildcats and Idaho State both finished 1-7 in conference games to share last place.

The Wildcats were 4-19 in Sears' two seasons.

"Jody was placed in a difficult situation and we appreciate what he did for our football team," athletic director Jerry Bovee said. "In the end, we haven't seen the progress in the program that we wanted and feel at this time it is best to make a change in our football leadership."

Bovee added Weber State will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.
