Oral Roberts University has officially become a member of the Southland Conference.
Oral Roberts president Mark Rutland and athletic director Mike Carter announced last year that the Golden Eagles would leave the Summit League for the Southland Conference, calling it a better geographic fit for the school. Their membership became official Sunday.
The Golden Eagles are the first Oklahoma school to join the league, which has membership in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. It is the smallest school in the conference, with 3,259 students, and is the league's first private school since the late 1970s.
During its 15 years in the Summit League, ORU's women's golf and baseball teams captured 15 tournament championships each.
In the 2011-2012 season, the men's basketball, women's tennis and baseball teams all won regular season titles.
