NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops says sophomore quarterback Kendal Thompson has suffered a right foot fracture.

Stoops says the left-handed quarterback, one of three signal callers competing for the starting job for the Sooners, is expected to return early during the upcoming season.

Thompson, the son of former Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson, was 8-of-15 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown during the spring game. He was expected to compete with junior Blake Bell and redshirt freshman Trevor Knight this month for the starting position.

Stoops says Thompson was expected to have surgery on Thursday.

The Sooners open their season by hosting Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 31.
