Tokyo, Japan (SportsNetwork.com) - The Japanese duo of Kei Nishikori and Yasutaka Uchiyama defeated the Canadian pairing of Frank Dancevic and Daniel Nestor in their first-round Davis Cup tie on Saturday.
Nishikori and Uchiyama took a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4 victory over Dancevic and Nestor to give Japan a 2-1 edge, as the two sides split a pair of singles rubbers on Friday.
Kei Nishikori gave Japan the first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Peter Polansky before Frank Dancevic evened the best-of-five for Canada with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 triumph over Go Soeda.
Sunday's reverse singles are currently slated to pit Nishikori against Dancevic in the opener and Go Soeda against Peter Polansky in a potential deciding rubber.
Japan is a perfect 5-0 all-time versus Canada in Davis Cup play, but the last meeting occurred way back in 1938. This is the first matchup outside of Montreal.
