What are the signs of a good friend? Ask ten different people, you'll likely get just as many different answers. Then again if you are polling people on friendship qualities it's very likely you don't have enough productive activity in your life.
I say anyone who takes off work and flies more than 1100 miles to see you is a pretty solid dude. Throughout the year, four of the best friends I could ask for did exactly that. This past weekend, as an early Christmas/birthday present, two of those four traveled from Pennsylvania to T-town. I'm still desperate for a direct flight from Tulsa to either Harrisburg, PA or Baltimore, MD...and after Sunday night, so are my pals.
Did Matt and Kyle ever think they would be flying to Tulsa, Oklahoma on a whim in the middle of December? Did I ever think as a teenager growing up in central Pennsylvania that 15 years later I would be overly excited to show them around downtown Tulsa? It’s funny how the passage of time and all of the transgressions we go through as young adults make these puzzle pieces fit together.
Were they surprised we have paved streets and don’t communicate with smoke signals? No! C'mon, who would have that impression of the southern plains?
This holiday season will be good for many things besides the celebrations and family get-togethers:
A great NFC East battle on Christmas Eve between the Cowboys and Eagles, a chance to squash the bird's season.
The Thunder tip-off their championship hopes on Christmas night against Orlando…
In addition to that, I’ve got my girlfriend, two dogs that always find a way to chew up something important, and as long as I can start it…a fire to enjoy Sunday night.
If you've somehow found a reason to "not" be excited for the holidays...look no further than the people who truly care about you, and it's not as if they always have to fly 1100 miles to show it. But it doesn't hurt the cause.
Happy Holidays! Next stop for me, the Fiesta Bowl.
