TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State extended its winning streak to nine games and shut out Bedlam-rival Oklahoma for the first time in six years with a 3-0 victory over the Sooners Friday night in front of 9,158 fans at ONEOK Field.
Andrew Heaney continued his dominance on the mound, tossing his third shutout of the season to help the 25th-ranked Cowboys improve to 27-17 overall and 12-7 in Big 12 Conference play. OSU’s winning streak is its longest since the Pokes won 12 in a row during the 2008 season.
A junior southpaw, Heaney allowed just three hits and struck out seven as he improved to 7-1 with his fourth complete game of the season. He retired the final 13 OU hitters in order to secure OSU’s first shutout in The Bedlam Series since May 14, 2006.
The Cowboy offense provided all the run support their ace needed with a two-out rally in the third inning. After a one-out walk to Zach Fish, Saulyer Saxon singled, but Hunter Bailey struck out for the second out.
Up next, Robbie Rea fell behind in the count against OU lefty Jordan John but then delivered an RBI single on a two-strike pitch. Jared Womack followed that with an RBI single of his own, again on a 1-2 pitch from John, to put OSU up 2-0.
The game’s final run came in the fifth on an RBI single from Hunter Bailey.
Saxon and Rea each collected two hits as the Cowboys finished with seven hits against John, who fell to 8-5 with the eight-inning complete game.
The Bedlam Series now shifts to Oklahoma City for the final two games at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Saturday’s contest is scheduled for 7:07 p.m., with Sunday’s finale set for 4:07 p.m.
