OSU fans were definitely in need of a laugh after the Cowboys' heartbreaking 41-31 loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl Classic Friday night. Mike Gundy provided it.
First, some background and context. In case you didn't know (and every Cowboys fan does know), Sports Illustrated did a scathing 5-part expose of the OSU football program this season. The series of stories was criticized by many people for having factual errors, because some of the interviewees claimed they didn't say what they were quoted as saying and, basically, because SI claimed the story would be a much bigger deal than it ended up being.
So that's the background. Here's what happened in the postgame press conference: a Sports Illustrated reporter asked Gundy a question. Gundy's response: "Where you from?" SI reporter: "I'm from Sports Illustrated, sir." Gundy: "Sweet. That's awesome. Make sure you document this so you have all your research and your background." Gundy then went on to very quickly answer the question before putting the cherry on the cake: "I thought that was a joke."
Check out the video for yourself. I attached the FOX23 coverage of the press conference exchange to this blog. It's classic. Trust me.
For me, Gundy's jab at SI was good, clean fun. That particular SI writer didn't have anything to do with the OSU expose, but Gundy didn't yell at him. It wasn't The Rant 2.0. It was a joke, and it was funny.
There's been a little bit of a backlash against Gundy for the comments. Some people say it was classless or unprofessional. I just don't see that. So often media members critique and judge the sports figures they cover but are very thin-skinned at any criticism headed the other direction. Hey, we critique players and coaches all the time. It's alright if they do the same sometimes. Plus, it was just funny, and I like funny.
