Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has been recommended to undergo surgery on his ailing right wrist.

Teixeira had not responded well to a cortisone shot given to alleviate inflammation in the wrist, and a recent MRI confirmed that a tendon sheath originally injured back in March has not healed adequately.

The Yankees placed Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list on June 18. If he chooses to have the surgery, it's very possible he will miss the rest of the season.

He is expected to meet with the media on 4 p.m. (et) on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old has been limited to just 15 games on the campaign. He has hit for a .151 batting average with three homers and 12 RBI.

The switch-hitting slugger began the season on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a strained wrist tendon on March 6 while preparing for the World Baseball Classic. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in May, then officially activated on May 31.
