San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants placed pitcher Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a contusion on his right forearm and purchased the contract of pitcher Yusmeiro Petit from Triple-A Fresno.

The move comes just one day after Cain was drilled in his pitching arm by a liner off the bat of Pittsburgh's Gaby Sanchez in the fourth inning of an eventual 10-5 victory for the Pirates.

Cain, who gave up three runs on seven hits prior to the injury, walked off the field and was replaced by Guillermo Moscoso. X-rays taken were negative.

The three-time All-Star owns an 8-8 record and a 4.43 earned run average over 26 starts this season.

Petit, 28, has made 15 starts at Fresno this season, compiling a 5-6 record and a 4.52 ERA. The right-hander appeared in one game for the Giants this season and gave up two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings of relief work.
