Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox recalled Will Middlebrooks from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday with hopes he can become the full-time third baseman.
The Red Sox had been platooning infielders Brandon Snyder and Brock Holt at third after dealing Jose Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline, but neither has proven effective.
Snyder was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, hitting just .209 for the Sox in 21 games. Holt is an even worse .203 at the plate with 11 RBI.
Middlebrooks will look to be the answer and returns to the major league level for the first time since being sent down on June 25. He will be in the starting lineup when Boston takes on the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.
The 24-year-old had a disappointing start to the 2013 season, prompting his demotion. After a promising rookie campaign, Middlebrooks struggled to a .192 batting average and hit nine homers with 25 RBI in 53 games.
Middlebrooks will take Snyder's roster spot and the Red Sox also activated Franklin Morales from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him, Boston optioned pitcher Pedro Beato to Pawtucket.
