Recap: Bowling Green vs. Tulsa
Bowling Green, OH (Sports Network) - William Houston ran for three touchdowns as he carried the Bowling Green Falcons to a lopsided 34-7 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the season opener for both programs at Doyt Perry Stadium.
Houston carried the ball 10 times for the Falcons (1-0) in his debut, accounting for 29 of the team's 233 rushing yards on the night. Matt Schilz started at quarterback for the hosts, but converted just one of his four attempts before taking a seat in favor of Matt Johnson. The backup connected on 11-of-23 for 151 yards and was intercepted once in the outing.
Tulsa (0-1) was guided by quarterback Cody Green who finished up 17-of-34 for 172 yards before giving way to Dane Evans who hit 3-of-7 for 50 yards and a score late in the meeting.
A slow moving game in the first half, the only points scored through the first 30 minutes of action came from BGSU kicker Tyler Tate who knocked through field goals of 34 and 28 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively.
The first touchdown of the contest came early in the third quarter when Houston bulled his way into the end zone from a yard out, capping a lengthy opening drive in order to give the hosts a 13-0 advantage.
Houston added two more one-yard TD runs in the fourth quarter, while Ryan Burbrink brought back a punt for a score as well, pushing the lead to 34-0 for the Falcons with just under seven minutes left on the clock.
Not even a minute later, with Evans at the helm, Tulsa finally broke through with a 27-yard TD catch by Derek Patterson. Unfortunately, the Golden Hurricane ran out of time and opportunities to cut even further into the deficit.
The visitors finished with just 12 first downs, 51 yards rushing and 273 yards of total offense in the outing.
BGSU was a top-notch defense last season as well, holding four opponents to single-digit scoring and permitting just 16.8 ppg which was tops in the Mid- American Conference and 10th nationally.
On the other side Tulsa, which entered the meeting with a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series, took a huge step backwards from 2012 when the program averaged just under 35 ppg.Game Notes
