Recap: San Jose St vs. Texas State

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - David Fales completed 26-of-38 passes for 376 yards and two touchdowns to lead the San Jose Spartans over the Texas State Bobcats, 31-20, in Western Athletic Conference action at Spartan Stadium.

De'Leon Eskridge gained 134 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown for San Jose State (6-2, 2-1 WAC), while David Freeman (two receptions, 76 yards) and Chandler Jones (four receptions, 37 yards) were on the receiving end of Fales' scoring strikes. The win makes the Spartans bowl eligible and they have won two straight games.

Texas State (3-4, 1-1) struggled offensively, especially in the second half. Shaun Rutherford completed 14-of-26 passes for 130 yards and threw a pair of interceptions. He was also the Bobcats' leading rusher with 14 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown.

The Spartans scored first on a 20-yard field goal by Austin Lopez at the 10:05 mark of the first quarter. Texas State responded with a one-yard touchdown run by Marcus Curry to take a 7-3 lead.

At the start of the second quarter, Freeman scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to put the Spartans up, 10-7.

Fales threw an interception to Bobcat defender Darryl Morris, and Texas State took advantage on its ensuing drive as Rutherford scored on a 45-yard touchdown.

Will Johnson made a 29-yard field goal for the Bobcats, which made the score 17-10.

With less than two minutes to play in the first half, Fales connected with Jones for a six-yard touchdown to tie the score up at 17-17, but Texas State came right back down the field and Johnson made a 42-yard field goal to put them up 20-17 just before halftime.

Fales connected with Freeman for a 78-yard touchdown pass with 9:46 left in the third quarter, which gave San Jose State the lead, 24-20. Eskridge ran in a 32-yard touchdown later in the quarter, which would be the last score of the game.

San Jose State outgained Texas State in total yards, 571-303. The Bobcats gained just 10 first downs.
